The two are related but not identical: a golfer can set up with a sound shaft plane at address and still swing well off that path on the way back.

The goal isn't to force your swing into someone else's mold, it's to find a path that's repeatable for your body and stick to it. There's no single "correct" plane that works for every golfer. Tour players who look nothing alike at the top of the backswing can both strike the ball flush, because their planes are matched to their own build and timing. Chasing someone else's swing on video usually causes more problems than it solves. Swinging harder isn't the fix either: extra speed without control tends to pull the club off its path, so a smoother, more controlled swing is usually the better starting point.
A plane problem usually shows up in ball flight before you ever diagnose the cause. A club that comes in too steep tends to produce pulls, deep divots, and shots that start left of target. A club that's too shallow or flat often leads to pushes, thin contact, and a loss of power through the ball. Watch your divot: if it points across your target line instead of straight down it, that's a strong clue your plane has drifted.
The position of the club at the top of your backswing is another tell. If the shaft points well outside or inside your target line at the top, your downswing has extra work to do just to get the club head back on plane before impact.
